The Time Machine Film Review

If you are one of the students assigned to do the film review for The Time Machine, please add your review as a comment to this post. Post your review no later than midnight, Monday, April 30, 2007. A good review will do the following: Start with a short synopsis (summary) of the film (just the basic setting, conflicts and characters) Address at least three criteria for judging a film (see below); explain how good a job you think the film did in each area Include specific examples to support your judgments of the criteria Make your review free of mechanical errors (spelling, capitalization, grammar) Here are the criteria for judging a film that we brainstormed in class. You must discuss at least three of these in your review: · Special Effects · Acting (expression, movement, emotion, believability) · Soundtrack · Plot (depth, complexity, suspense) · Setting (place, time, ex. Space, new planets) · Sound effects · Satirical element · Costumes · Character development · Originality · Staging · References to outside topics/events · Cinematography · Dialogue · Makeup (goes with costuming) · Props (weapons, phasers, etc) · Transportation · Elements of conflict

The Time Machine was a very good movie. They used a very good method of time travel, and they described it very well. i didnt get why he did'nt go in the past as well. He went strait to the future to find out what was next and completely skipped the past. The special effects were not the best but for that time they were probably amazing. One thing that confused me in the movie was when he left his time how come no one came to look for him. It seemed like there was no effort put forward to find him.

Despite being outdated and tacky, the time machine turned out to be a pretty good movie. The way that George first demonstrated his miniature time machine was very creative. While watching, I wondered if there were any laws about moving back and foreward through time so easily. I thought eventually the movie would adress some re-percussions of it. The effects were outdated and costumes were a joke but they must have been acceptable at the time. The plot was overall pretty good, it addressed the major wars of the 20th century before jumping ahead hundreds of thousands of years. Some parts of the story made me laugh. I seem to remember one scene where George was just walking through the forest, yet the exciting music playing made it seem so much more dramatic. There seems to be a pattern of that in older movies. Ignoring these certain instances, I felt like the acting was pretty good. The above ground people (cant remember their name) did a very convinging job of acting stupid and not caring, and Georges character did a good job of reaching out to the watchers emotions. (compassion, curiousity, confusion) Overall grade- B, good for its time but could use some more action and effects.

The Time Machine was a very good film. I liked it much more than the new film. it would have been cool to see him go back in time too. For the time it was filmed I found it to be very advanced. The worlocks weren't scary to us, but back in those days it might have been pretty scary. i also enjoyed the effects it showed as he traveled through time, such as the sun rising and setting really fast.

You asked some good questions about the film. Your review is incomplete in that you didn't explain thoroughly your opinions of elements like special effects. You need to address three elements and mention specific details.

You gave some good explantions of some of your opinions. In a review you usually include a brief summary of the film.

You mentioned a couple of specific details from the film, though you could have expanded on your thoughts. In a review you usually include a brief summary of the film.

I think that the Time Machine was a good film. I agree with Andrew that the film was outdated and tacky, but I think that because this film is dated, it is more enjoyable. I know that dated films don't appeal to everyone, but I found extra enjoyment in this film because of it's "tackiness". That being said, I didn't like the ending. I think that the plot would've been richer if he wouldn't have gone back, and just stayed in his own time trying to convince others of what he'd seen in the future. I think that this would've been more valiant, and therefore made the film a little bit better. I didn't like the sound effects either. I thought that the producers should have worked a little harder on that. The sounds during the film seemed as if they'd been added with no previous thought or evaluation. However, I thought it was a good movie overall.

You make some good commets about the end of the film. If George really cared about the future, you'd think he'd try to prevent the bad influences in the present. I wondered exactly what you meant by "tacky." What are some examples of that? A review usually includes a short summary of the film.

I think that "tackiness" means cheesy music, and other outdated aspects of the movie. There were lots of examples of this in The Time Machine with sound effects. Tackiness is something that comes with the age of the film. I don't think that people who viewed this film when it first came out thought it was "tacky". However, viewing it now, most people (or at least Andrew and I) think that it's tacky!

Ah, I see. Your addition helped clarify your comments.
